Summary

The Eastern Question and the Liberation of Bulgaria in 1856 – The Eastern Question was the central component of Bismarck’s entire foreign policy strategy. Bismarck’s diplomatic approach to the Eastern Question and all his actions were entirely subordinated to the policy of unifying Germany and consolidating it as a great power in Europe. In terms of its objective results, German policy regarding the Eastern Question had, to a certain extent, a favorable impact on the outcome of the Bulgarian liberation struggle. Since Bismarck’s diplomacy worked against preserving the integrity of the Ottoman Empire and aided Russia in its struggle against the Porte, it became a favorable external factor for the Bulgarian revolution. It is therefore no coincidence that the news of the April Uprising was met with joy in Berlin, and its brutal suppression gave the “Iron Chancellor” cause to join his voice to the outraged European public opinion in defense of the Bulgarians.
