This study focuses on the social and historical views of Zahari Stoyanov. Particular attention is paid to his work in establishing the new national pantheon, and an attempt is made to trace the paths, forms and means through which the images of the new national heroes – who died in the armed struggles to win political independence – were established in the public consciousness. This is the central theme defining Zahari Stoyanov’s work, which he utilises in his endeavour to strengthen the sense of national dignity and historical significance amongst ordinary Bulgarians.
