Summary

The April Uprising of 1876 is intrinsically linked to the overall National Revival process as the culminating expression of the Bulgarian national revolution. It marked the final resolution of the national liberation struggle through radical action. Its preparation began as early as the dawn of the Renaissance era, passing through the dramatic trials of numerous conspiracies and regional uprisings, through which the national revolution accumulated military and political experience, refined its organizational forms and tactical approaches, sharpened its ideological positions, tested the enemy’s reflexes for counteraction, and created the necessary socio-political mindset for mass acts of self-sacrifice. The famous rallying cry “Freedom or Death” was not a sentimental phrase, but a conscious need for self-sacrifice in the unequal struggle against the Ottoman Empire. It was precisely thanks to this mass self-sacrifice that the Bulgarian people lost the battles but won the war. The military defeat of the uprising very soon turned into a political victory—the goal had been achieved. The Bulgarian state rose from the ashes of five centuries of oblivion. The astonishing audacity of the April Uprising fighters and their martyrdom laid the foundations of modern Bulgaria.
