The monograph examines the economic results in the euro area during the first 20 years of the introduction of the euro into circulation. The policies conducted and their dependence on the global environment and the economic challenges that have arisen and are emerging are commented on. We examine to what extent the theory of the optimal currency area in the context of a common fiscal policy relates to the euro area and why fiscal sovereignty is more likely to be preserved within the monetary union in the future.
