Summary

This study deals with three four main problems: 1. With Logos in its entirety, i.e. beyond the elementary relationship between image and inscription, and the correlation between it and the addressee and the environment, as well as treated in light of the modern notions of intervisuality and intertextuality; 2. With the New Metropolitan Cathedral (of St Stephen) in Nessebur and its artistic circle as an example of high art within the late sixteenth- and the seventeenth-century Bulgarian lands as placed within a broader Balkan context; 3. With the cultural history of Nessebur in the Ottoman period, adding new, unpublished until now inscriptions and sources that would help to reconstruct the past of Bulgaria’s Black Sea southern coast, and 4. Attempts to prove that the existence and use of a painter’s manual of the type of Priest Daniel’s Hermeneia in the Balkans goes back as far as the sixteenth century.
