Summary

This book is dedicated to the monasteries around Sofia, which in the past formed the Sofia Mala Athenian Mountain complex. Their emergence and development during different historical periods are traced. Appearing at different times (some of the monasteries were founded during the years of the First Bulgarian State), the holy monasteries reached their greatest flourishing in the 14th century, when the complex was formed in the Sofia region, named after the Athos Sredechka (Sofia) Athenian Mountain. The monograph also outlines the changes that occurred in the social role and place of the Sofia monasteries after the fall of Bulgaria under Ottoman rule, and their fate during the Bulgarian National Revival and after the Liberation of Bulgaria to the present day. The book examines 46 monasteries near Sofia, presented with their architectural and iconographic features. A place is also devoted to the condition and functions of the Sofia monasteries today. The contemporary course of Christian holidays in these monasteries is examined, showing the extent to which traditional folk customs are preserved and performed. The study is supplemented with data on the patron saints of the monasteries in the Sofia region, and the customs and rites associated with their cult.
