Summary

The class Arachnida includes 16 orders – 6 orders of mites, one order of spiders (over 100,000 species in total) and 9 smaller orders that most people know little about – scorpions, pseudoscorpions, opiliones, palpi, solifugids, schizomids, uropygids, amblypygids, and ricinuleids (about 14,700 known species). Most of these "spider relatives" live in tropical countries and have unique biology and zoogeography. This is what makes them important to science, and new knowledge about them is constantly being accumulated. The author, Prof. Dr. Peter Beron, is the long-time director of the National Museum of Natural History at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. There, he has arranged the specimens of all these little-known animals that have been collected over many years. The book provides an overview of the latest taxonomy of the orders, their ecology and biology, the most poisonous scorpions, and the myths and beliefs about them. Research on these animals in Bulgaria is traced, and maps of the ranges of many families have been drawn up. Some of the most distinguished arachnologists are also presented as examples for students and other curious people. The book is richly illustrated and accompanied by the most important literature.
