Summary

The monograph is dedicated to the development of simula-tion models of hydrological processes, the assessment of water re-sources and the supporting of water management in river basins with the help of computer programs. On the example of the river basins of Mesta and Struma on Bulgarian territory are presented the computer systems HEC-HMS for modeling the process of rainfall-runoff for continuous or event simulation, WEAP for assessment and planning of water resources, as well as MULINO for decision support in water management using multicriteria analysis to evalu-ate alternatives, PRODEC with the development of procedures with a branched tree structure for decision making and generalized net-work models. The advantage of some of the software is that they have "built-in" data of the ground cover obtained from satellites and access to global databases from the historical climate monitoring for precipitation, temperature, wind, etc. The approaches and simu-lation models of Bulgarian rivers developed by the authors provide an opportunity to solve a number of applied problems for assess-ment and management of water resources.

About The Authors

Emil Burnazki
Emil BurnazkiEmil Burnazki is a graduate of Sofia University "St. Cl. Ohridski ”, where he graduated in mathematics and hydromechanics. In 1981 he defended his dissertation on numerical modeling in pipeline hydraulics at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. He was a part-time lecturer at the Technical University in Sofia, and since 1991 he has been an associate professor at the Institute of Water Problems (now the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology) at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. He has specialized with prominent scientists at the Ukrainian and Georgian Academy of Sciences. From November 1998 to July 1999 he was a guest researcher at the National Polytechnic University of Athens. In the summer of 2000 he was a NATO Fellow in Italy, and from August 2002 to July 2003 he was a guest researcher at the Geophysical Experimental Observatory in Trieste, where he worked on combined hydrodynamic and ecological modeling of the Mediterranean basin. Participates in European projects under the HYDRALAB II and III program in the Netherlands, in joint studies with the Ukrainian and Czech Academies of Sciences in two-phase solids. He has led the Bulgarian team in the EU framework programs for integrated water management in transboundary river basins (TRANSCAT). He is a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Balkan Ecology, Mining Journal (Georgia), as well as of the International Association for Hydraulic Research and Engineering (IAHR), of the Association of Experts in Bulgaria in Ecotechnologies. He is the author of over 110 scientific publications, has presented his results at many conferences in Europe and the United States. Its developments are used in our hydro-ameliorative, mining, heat and energy practice and in construction.
