Summary

This collection is the result of the joint efforts of the "History of the World and International Relations in Modern and Contemporary Times" Section at the Institute of History of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2001. It includes materials from the discussion held within the section, as well as studies on the East and West in terms of their contradictions, mutual influence, and integration, submitted for publication that same year. The studies address issues in economics, politics, and culture, and clarify the concept of “East–West” . Each article develops a research project that envisages expanding studies related to the processes that took place between the East and the West in the 18th–20th centuries, as these can help explain the contemporary European and global configuration. They also explore the place of Bulgarians within the context of European and world history, as well as their current motivation and desire for integration.
