The study analyses the transformations of Bulgarian national identity during the last decade of the 20th century and its interdependencies with ethnic and cultural identity. As a result of structural and functional changes in the nation state, national identity has reconfigured its components towards a transition to cultural identity. Over the last decade, Bulgarian society has instinctively oriented itself towards strengthening the cultural layer of its self-image, towards consolidating the cultural fragment of its identity, which is linked to the stabilisation of the Bulgarian ethnic model.
