Summary
The book is the fruit of inspiration and dedication. It is also the result of a happy combination of artistry and academicism. It was born out of architect Belin Mollov's desire to show some of his most successful works to the general public. From the multitude of drawings, those that recreate the most significant places and objects in Bulgaria have been selected. Some of them are dedicated to monuments of ancient and medieval history. They represent five of the seven sites in present-day Bulgaria that are included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List. There are also images of places where the Bulgarian nation's efforts have materialized, not only through its own strength, but also with the participation of internationally renowned Austrian, Italian, French, and Czech artists, to make up for what was lost during centuries of foreign rule and to live as part of "Europe." Alongside them are selected iconic monuments that have preserved the national memory of suffering, sacrifice, heroism, and gratitude. Last but not least, paintings representing part of the Ottoman heritage are also included so that it will not be forgotten.
The brief descriptions are a useful addition to the artistically recreated objects, and the artist's vision does not compete with professional photography. The biographical notes on the most frequently mentioned architects present the personalities whose projects are featured.
Readers are offered a different perspective on our history and culture. The book can also serve as a cherished memento of home for Bulgarians living abroad and an invitation to revisit Bulgaria, rediscover it, and fall in love with it all over again.
