Summary

In the monograph, the authors examine theoretically and empirically the relation between economic growth and convergence as regards the EU Member States, in particular the euro area and Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) countries, and then we focus on the candidate countries of the so-called Western Balkans. The period under review is 2001-2019, including diverse subperiods, which enriches our research in the following directions: (a) the years of accession of CEE countries to the EU and relatively high growth in the beginning of this century, when there were more challenges the criteria for nominal convergence to be fulfilled; (b) the period of the global financial and economic crisis of 2008-2009 and the following debt crisis in the euro area, when low economic growth did not make it possible to accelerate the catching-up process and intensify divergence processes; (c) the time of recession, especially in the euro area, and recovery from the crisis.
