After the Critique of Pure Reason, published in 1781, the Critique of Judgment is the only work that occupied Kant for such a long time, mainly with regard to the problems of aesthetics. Separately and independently of these problems, he also deals here with the problems of organic life. The main problem of all three of Kant's Critiques is contained in the question: How are a priori synthetic judgments possible? In the Critique of Judgment, this question refers to the a priori principles of aesthetic judgment of the beautiful and the sublime in art and nature, and then to the a priori principles of logical judgment of nature. Accordingly, Kant speaks separately about the critique of aesthetic judgment and the critique of teleological judgment. In the period before the Critique of Pure Reason, he was still very far from the conception of aesthetics that we find in the Critique of Judgment. Only after researching and developing the problems of the Critique of Pure Reason and then those of the Critique of Practical Reason did it become clear to Kant that the aesthetics of the time, with its psychological development of empirical criteria for judging the beautiful and the sublime, could not explain the logical structure of taste judgment. With the idea of the need for a critique of taste in a transcendental sense, he also came to the need for a purely philosophical examination of its problems — a philosophical aesthetics.
