Summary

The book is the first attempt to write a research biography of Dr. Stoyan Chomakov - a prominent, controversial and poorly studied figure from the Bulgarian Renaissance. This also means rewriting the history of the Church Question in the 1860s - 1870s, since the two topics almost coincide. The basis of the work are the third and fourth chapters. They examine Chomakov's activities in 1861 - 1878, when he was in Constantinople and played the role of a lay leader in the struggle for a separate Bulgarian hierarchy. His great merit is that he managed to force Russian and Turkish policy to apply the national principle to the Church Question, as a result of which in 1870 the Exarchate was created and the Bulgarians were granted the status of a millet (nation).
