Summary

This collection contains articles presented as lectures or papers at the International Summer School of Bulgarian Studies in Plovdiv in 2024. The volume brings together established and emerging scholars united by their shared interest in Bulgarian studies. The texts reflect the diversity of issues in Bulgarian studies and are devoted to current topics that highlight various aspects of the field. The book explores contemporary cultural practices and social processes such as precariousness and family entrepreneurship, agrarian transformations in the Bulgarian countryside, the use of old rural fountains in the present day, the construction of national identity through historical reenactments, and the life choices of activists in an organization working to assist the chronically ill. The collection also examines foreigners’ interest in Bulgarian folklore, the teaching of Bulgarian culture at universities in the United States, and the functions of the Bulgarian community center and the Japanese Kōminkan. A historical reconstruction is proposed of the migration of Bulgarian refugees from Western Thrace to the Eastern Rhodopes between the two world wars, as well as of the policies toward Bulgarians in Tavria during the period 1920–1991.
