Summary

This book presents a study of the transformations of love and intimate experience in the digitalizing social world. Focusing on the generation of contemporary youth in Bulgaria, socialized online, it reveals the dynamics of ethical orientations and social relations in contemporary Bulgarian society as part of global processes. It traces the intergenerational and intragenerational transfer of knowledge and values, the assimilation of cultural norms and worldviews, the media struggles for collective representations in the field of intimacy, the construction of behavioral models and identities under the influence of the digital environment. With dominant notions of love and intimacy changing over time in local and European contexts and with the help of examples from popular culture, from practices in digital platforms for everyday use such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, the advice of new social actors such as influencers and digital communities for mutual assistance, the promises of innovative opportunities for experiencing intimacy in virtual reality, the analysis traces the transition from a romantic to a post-romantic model of love. It is not simply not unilinear and unambiguous in the forms of valuation, tabooization and transgression of a certain normativity by young people, but it fits into complex battles of policies that restructure social and moral horizons. As the reader of this book will follow in the course of the unfolding of changes in historically dominant models of love and intimacy (both as representations and as specific practices), talking about love today is both a cliché and a political bet, certainly a marginalized topic in the social sciences, but also a topic that cannot remain value-neutral either collectively or individually.
