Summary
The literature of the Bulgarian National Revival is presented in this two-volume edition—Volume 2 and Volume 3—through selected works by ten of the most significant authors of the Revival period. These texts are emblematic; they outline the trends in intellectual life during the 18th and 19th centuries and represent the pinnacle of achievement in poetry, fiction, and drama. Their creators are among the most prominent proponents of the national idea and of Bulgaria’s cultural integration into the European values of the 19th century. The Renaissance marked the beginning of ideological and artistic models; it was then that the main genres of the new literature were established, and a new type of creative personality emerged. The masterpiece of Renaissance fiction—*Bulgarians of Old*—outlines the hallmarks of new Bulgarian artistic prose through its plot, themes, characters, and narrative technique. Volume Two includes Paisii Hilendarski and his "History of the Slavs and Bulgarians," Sofronii Vrachanski, Konstantin Miladinov, Dobri Chintulov, Grigor Parlichev, Georgi S. Rakovski, and Petko R. Slaveykov.
