Summary
Undoubtedly, the period from the 1880s to the 1930s was a time of intense creative vitality, when the scope of Bulgarian literature expanded and its classical canon took shape. Masterpieces emerged that form the backbone of our literary tradition; the major literary movements took shape—from traditional realism to symbolism, modernism, and avant-gardism. At the end of the 19th century, Vazov’s work was the foundation of modern Bulgarian literature, regardless of the powerful epic talent of Zahari Stoyanov. Vazov’s work alone constitutes a whole body of literature with outstanding achievements in all genres. Volume Five of “The Golden Key to Classical Bulgarian Fiction” includes the works of Ivan Vazov—“Epic of the Forgotten,” “The Volunteers of Shipka,” "The Uncles," "The Murmuring Maritsa," "Is she coming, a Bulgarian woman?," "Grandfather Yotzo watches," and those of Zahari Stoyanov—"Notes on the Bulgarian Uprisings."
