Summary
The second edition of "Russian Modern Poetry" has been significantly expanded and enriched. It presents the major modernist movements, some of which emerged later in the poetry of the "Silver Age" (Imagism, etc.). An additional feature is “women’s poetry, which does not strictly belong to specific modernist schools but has clearly been influenced by them” (M. Lokhvitskaya, L. Stolitsa, Cherubina de Gabriac, M. Tsvetaeva, M. Shkapska, and others). The “Appendices” section includes polemics that unfolded fiercely within Symbolism (V. Ivanov, A. Blok on one side, V. Bryusov on the other) and between the various modernist movements. A large portion of the included poetic and critical texts were until recently inaccessible and remain bibliographic rarities (the poetry and theories of the Imagists, the Oberiuts, and others). This edition does not claim to be an anthology. Rather, it is an attempt to outline the main directions in the artistic explorations of Russian modernism, to highlight the key points of literary debates, and to give the reader the opportunity to see how the creators themselves resolved aesthetic challenges. The book "Russian Modern Poetry" is intended for students, teachers, schoolchildren, and a wide range of readers.
