Summary

The book is the result of many years of research among Bulgarians in Hungary, carried out by a team at the Institute of Folklore. The study combines two perspectives: that of the institutions and that of the representatives of the community themselves. It analyzes the activities of Bulgarian cultural institutions related to the preservation and maintenance of Bulgarian cultural identity and the establishment of Bulgarians in the host society, as well as the forms and methods of cultural exchange between Bulgaria and Hungary. Based on the stories of their experiences, emblems of ethnocultural identification and aspects of intercultural interactions are highlighted. Contact with Bulgarians abroad has a special impact and leads to self-reflection. It makes us look for answers to questions we don't usually ask ourselves: What does it really mean to be Bulgarian? How do we make sense of national symbols? What kind of spiritual attitude and open-mindedness do you need to live and establish yourself in a foreign ethnic environment?
