Summary

The study is devoted to the history, specificity and aesthetics of Islamic art in the context of the Hadiths and Sufism. It is also the first study of its kind in the Bulgarian humanities. In the first chapter – “Images of Animals” – the animal species are examined in hierarchical order: from the most common to the rarest. The visual material included in the second chapter – “Images of Humans” – is examined in terms of its belonging to the applied and therefore fine arts. The material included in the two chapters is presented on an ethnic basis or as belonging to Arab, Persian and Ottoman art. The second chapter comments on and analyses the depiction of human beings, especially in Islamic miniature painting. In this context, some folk paintings are examined, as well as the so-called paintings-inscriptions, which are unique to Ottoman fine art. The historical development of Arab, Persian and Ottoman miniature painting is also traced. Special attention is given to the images of the Prophet Muhammad, which have found a place in the Islamic miniature tradition.
