Summary
This study draws attention to serious problems in the current situation of the Republic of North Macedonia, which explain the contradictions in its political behaviour, especially in its attitude towards Bulgaria. The young state belongs to Europe geographically and historically, but today it has stopped its political drive toward the European Union, torn between its integration aspirations and its inability, or unwillingness, to critically reflect on its Yugoslav heritage and part with the impediments to achieve its goal. The overall analysis of the state image, the calculated attitude of the political class toward Bulgaria and the reasons for this, suggest that without a political and scientific-historical catharsis, social change seems unlikely. Given Bulgaria’s goodwill and the EU’s desire to incorporate the Republic of North Macedonia, the country’s separation from the ideological burden of its past, hindering the necessary reforms, is essential as proof of its commitment to the European democratic standards and values. It is also essential as a guarantee of its European and democratic future.
