Summary

The book is dedicated to one of the main problems in the still poorly studied traditional culture of the heterodox Muslim Turks (Kizylbashi, Aliani) in Bulgaria. Based on various sources – hagiographic and historical works, oral traditions and data from the ritual – the study presents seven of the most revered Muslim heterodox saints in the past and today. Along with discovering and emphasizing the individual traits in each image, the author also pays attention to the messages of the legendary texts, the fruit of the centuries-old striving of the community to build its collective identity in relation to other ethnic and religious groups and to the need to constantly rethink the nature-man-society relationships. One of the chapters is dedicated to Kiz Ana Sultan – a female image, which is relatively rare in Muslim hagiography. The book is of interest to ethnologists, folklorists, cultural historians, as well as to every intelligent reader.
